March 16, 1864 - Occupation of Alexandria, Louisiana by Federal Troops
On March 15, moving northwest along the river to Alexandria, the Union force, commanded by Brig. Gen. A.J. Smith, and naval flotilla approached Alexandria. They found out that the local Confederate defenders, commanded by Maj. Gen. Richard Taylor, had fled the town. They had learned of the Union flotilla heading their way.
On March 16, the Union forces occupied Alexandria. The town's 600 remaining residents hid in their houses.
